Colorado Technical University (CTU), a leading provider of education for career-motivated students, has launched a new Master of Science in Homeland Security degree. This degree addresses the evolving and advanced skills required for professionals to help prepare and protect the nation and our local communities from terrorism, natural disasters, and public health emergencies.

CTU is one of only a handful of universities in the world to offer a master’s degree in homeland security online. The specialized CTU Master of Science in Homeland Security curriculum is designed specifically for aspiring leaders in homeland security professions such as law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, public health, security, and critical infrastructure.  The innovative content provides an understanding of key strategies, policies, and constitutional issues, as well as providing the analytical and communications tools to help prepare students to be true thought leaders in their chosen area of expertise. It also is designed to expand students’ knowledge of other homeland security subdisciplines, including cybersecurity, law enforcement, fire, emergency services, and public health.

“The advanced degree program allows students to hone their critical thinking, research, and communication skills to help advance [them] in their existing organizations, agencies, or companies, or to move into other careers within the new and developing field of homeland security,” said Nadav Morag, PhD. Dr. Morag, the CTU dean of security studies and a published author on terrorism, security strategy, and foreign policy, continued: “Our coursework is designed for high-level thinkers who will learn to solve complex programs and make strategic policy.”

 The Master of Science in Homeland Security is delivered through CTU’s virtual campus, allowing students to collaborate and learn online, anytime from anywhere in the world.  The courses are taught by faculty members, many with professional careers in homeland security, bringing added insights and perspectives into the classroom.

“The CTU Master of Science in Homeland Security is breaking new ground in terms of the quality of the content and the expertise—both practical and academic—of our distinguished faculty,” said Stephen Recca, CTU program director for homeland security, whose background includes assignments with the Central Intelligence Agency, State Department, and Department of Defense. “This degree program pushes the envelope, challenging students to look over the horizon for the next generation of challenges in homeland security.”

In addition to the program’s core curriculum, students have the option of choosing electives in two subfields of homeland security—cybersecurity and emergency management and public health.  All students will research and write a thesis.

Acceptance into this program is based on submission of a written essay or recently published article in a peer-reviewed journal.  Candidates must also have either a bachelor’s degree in homeland security or an emergency management-related field, with a GPA of 3.0 or better, or five years of work experience as a homeland security professional.
