Following a successful trip to Brazil in July, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano met with the Brazilian Minister of External Relations, Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, in Washington on October 25. The discussions centered on the U.S.-Brazil Homeland Security Dialogue that will highlight joint efforts to enhance domestic security, facilitate legitimate trade and travel, secure the global supply chain and promote civil aviation security.
Secretary Napolitano said, “Brazil is one of the United States’ closets partners in protecting the Americas from evolving threats. This Dialogue will affirm our ongoing commitment to enhance aviation security and global supply chain security, and facilitate legitimate trade and travel.” The first meeting of the Homeland Security Dialogue will be held in 2013.
Minister Patriota also attended the 4th edition of the Brazil-USA Global Partnership Dialogue. Created in 2010, the Global Partnership Dialogue (DPG) brings greater political momentum to joint initiatives on education, science, technology, innovation, social inclusion and the fight against discrimination.
In June-July 2014, Brazil will host the FIFA World Cup competition. Within 24 months Brazil will then host the 31st Olympiad in August 2016 followed by the Paralympics in September.
