West Nile Virus Update

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued new numbers for the current West Nile outbreak. Through September 5, 87 people have now died of the virus across the United States, which is up from the 66 confirmed deaths as of August 29. Overall, the number of cases reported now stands at 1,993, up front the previous week’s total of 1,590.

The CDC now lists this outbreak as the largest since 1999 with Texas recording the most deaths at 40 through Wednesday September 5. Texas also had recorded the largest number of the most serious neuro-invasive form of the illness. A total of 47 of 50 states have now reported cases of West Nile with five states accounting for 75 percent of all cases: Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Dakota and Oklahoma.
