Thursday, August 23, 2012

NYPD and the Microsoft Corporation have unveiled a new technology called Domain Awareness System “that aggregates and analyzes existing public safety data streams in real time, providing NYPD investigators and analysts with a comprehensive view of potential threats and criminal activity.”

NYPD and Microsoft jointly developed the system by bringing together the technical skills and the technology offered by Microsoft, allied with the daily experiences, knowledge and skills of NYPD officers.

The Domain Awareness System will subsequently be offered to other potential customers, and New York City will receive 30 percent of the revenues generated by the sales.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said: “The system is a transformative tool because it was created by police officers for police officers. Its development is a testament to the talent and experience of our officers. And this agreement with Microsoft will allow NYPD to continue to fund innovative counterterrorism and crime prevention programs.”

New York City’s Commissioner of Information Technology and Telecommunications Rahul Merchant, added that “by using the New York City Wireless Network to support the Domain Awareness System, we’re leveraging an existing, innovative technology solution to provide ever more capabilities to police officers in the field.”
