Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, accompanied by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner David V. Aguilar and Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin, traveled to Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico over the period July 11-13. “While in Brazil Secretary Napolitano traveled to Brasilia and São Paulo and met with her counterparts to discuss joint efforts on global supply chain security, trusted traveler programs, intellectual property rights enforcement, and collaborative efforts to combat human trafficking. The Secretary also met with the American Chamber of Commerce and the Council of the Americas.” Brazil will be host to the world’s two largest sporting events in the space of two years: the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the 31st Olympics in 2016.
During her trip to the Dominican Republic, Secretary Napolitano met with President Leonel Fernández and other officials to discuss law enforcement cooperation and ongoing efforts to combat illicit trafficking. President Fernández will be succeeded by Danilo Medina who will be sworn in as president on August 16.
While in Puerto Rico Secretary Napolitano met with Governor Luis Fortuño, Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi, Puerto Rico Police Department Superintendent Héctor Pesquera and DHS officials stationed in Puerto Rico.
