In 2005, the Government Printing Office (GPO) commenced the production of electronic passports. Since 2007, the GPO has produced only electronic passports. In April 2012, the figure surpassed 75 million. The passport includes an integrated secure chip and antenna. They are produced at two secure facilities located in Washington, DC and at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Acting Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks said, “This is a significant accomplishment for GPO and one more step forward in our history of producing the passport for the Department of State. GPO is a leader in the production of secure credentials and I am proud our employees have contributed to strengthening the security of the passport and our Nation.
The GPO has produced passports for the Department of State since the 1920s.
