Greece Constructs Border Fence

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

The Greek government has "started construction of a 12.6-km long razor-wire-topped fence designed to keep out migrants," reports the euobserver. The construction of the fence will cost "an estimated €5.5 million," and will be  built in the Evros region of the Greek-Turkish border where the vast majority of irregular migrants try to cross into the European Union." The project is scheduled for completion in September 2012. The European Commission has already described the fence project as "pointless" and has made it clear that it "has not and will not co-finance the fence." From a Greek perspective, Christos Papoustis, the Greek Minister for Citizen Protection,  opined that " the fence has both practical and symbolic value."
