Comprehensive Cyber Security Act of 2012 Introduced

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

The Cybersecurity Act of 2012, S.2105, represents the formulation of a single bill following a directive from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) that all Senate committees that had related legislation come together and produce a single bill. Among the requirements in the bill are that the Secretary of Homeland Security select from among existing industry practices and standards, or choose performance requirements proposed by the private sector, unless none of these mitigates the risks identified through public-private collaboration.

"The administration supports the bill that was introduced in the Senate this week," Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told "the House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee hearing on the department's funding request for fiscal 2013," reports NextGov. With regards private sector cooperation, the Secretary noted that it "can be more episodic than systemic and, given the given size of the problem, we really need much more involvement from the private sector."
