National Severe Weather Workshop (March 1-3; Norman, OK) The workshop will focus on hazardous weather information sharing and discussions of the effective transmission of messages about meteorological risk. Emergency managers, weather enthusiasts, teachers, students, meteorologists, broadcasters, and vendors in threat alerting, sheltering, and communications will gather, present, and discuss inter-related topics about weather hazards. The first day will be devoted to “A Look Back” at some significant weather events of recent years. Joint CBRN Conference and Exhibition (March 12-14; Baltimore) The Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Conference and Exhibition will provide a forum for the exchange of CBRN defense information among warfighters, CBRN incident responders, technology developers, acquisition professionals, and the supporting industry. This exchange will focus on a better understanding of and increased responsiveness to CBRN defense users’ needs. Selected speakers will discuss current issues and future direction. National Hurricane Conference (March 26-29; Orlando, FL) The conference aims to improve hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation in the United States and the tropical islands of the Caribbean and Pacific. It also serves as a national forum for federal, state, and local officials to exchange ideas and recommend new policies to improve emergency management. It will emphasize lessons learned from hurricane strikes, state-of-the-art programs, new ideas being tested or considered, new or ongoing assistance programs, and the ABC’s of hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation—recognizing that there is a continual turnover of emergency management leadership and staff. Nebraska Infrastructure Protection Conference (March 27-28; La Vista, NE) This conference is designed to assist in information sharing, collaboration, and networking with those protecting Nebraska’s critical infrastructure assets. It fosters participation in Nebraska’s homeland security initiatives and programs by partnering industry representatives with government personnel to share knowledge and expertise. Emergency Preparedness Conference (April 11-12; Arlington, VA) The conference will focus on how accreditation standards have provided healthcare organizations with a framework to prepare for and resurrect from disaster. Ethics & Public Emergencies (January 26; Edmonton, Alberta) This presentation by the Health Law Institute at the University of Alberta will address three core sets of ethical dilemmas in responding to epidemics and other public health emergencies—rationing, restrictions, and responsibilities—exploring each with reference to recent public health events—the attacks of September 11, 2001; the global SARS epidemic; and traumatic hurricanes affecting the U.S. Gulf Coast—and considering how communities can be better prepared to handle these challenging ethical issues in the future. Disaster Risk Reduction and ‘Built-In’ Resilience: Towards Overarching Principles for Construction Practice (January 30; Durham, UK) This seminar at Durham University highlights the role and position of the construction sector in creating resilience. This conference will address border security challenges such as transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, contraband, illegal trafficking of humans, and terrorist attacks, presenting the latest regional maritime border protection programs. Symposium on Disaster Communications (March 16; Sendai, Japan) This symposium, organized by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the International Telecommunications Union, will focus on the application of telecommunications and information and communications technologies for disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. Lessons will be mainly drawn from recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011. Visions of Sharing Responsibility for Disaster Resilience (March 29; Melbourne, Australia) This workshop will address two questions: What does the idea of shared responsibility mean and where does it come from? What needs to be done to implement this idea and what could undermine it? Invited speakers representing a broad range of perspectives will reflect on these questions. Then researchers working in the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre’s “Understanding Risk” research program will present emerging research in this area. Two panels representing a wide cross-section of stakeholders will consider top-down (government-led) and bottom-up (community-led) contributions to sharing risk and responsibility. New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering Conference (April 13-15; Christchurch, New Zealand) This year’s theme is “Implementing Lessons Learnt.” The conference will include a public session overviewing the effects of and response to the September 2010 Darfield and February 2011 Christchurch earthquakes; presentations by Roger Sutton of the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and Prof. David Alexander of the University of Florence; a tour to observe the impacts of the earthquakes and the recovery progress; and the annual general meeting of the society.
