November 15 - Governor Announces Increase In Homeland Security for the Holiday Season -- Gov. Don Sundquist today announced Tennessee's plan to expand National Guard presence in the state's airports over the holidays. This announcement comes after President George W. Bush authorized federal funds for an increase in airport security last week. Tennessee will see a 25 percent increase in National Guard forces at five of the state's major commercial airports. November 6 - Governor Authorizes Reward Increase for Information Regarding Threats -- Gov. Don Sundquist has authorized increasing the amount of the reward to anyone who provides information leading to the apprehension, indictment and conviction of any person or persons responsible for making threats involving bombs, fires, anthrax or any other emergency since September 11, 2001. The reward, first set at $10,000, has now been increased to $25,000. [view press release]
October 30 - Governor Announces Essential Needs in Homeland Security Package -- Gov. Don Sundquist today announced measures to address imminent security concerns in Tennessee totaling more than $8 million. "I want to assure all Tennesseans that the most important function of state government is to protect the lives of its citizens," Sundquist said during a news conference at his Capitol office. "We must fulfill this obligation despite our state's budget problems. The events of September 11 have mandated that we shift our priorities and focus on every aspect of security in this state." October 15 - Governor Announces Bioterror Measure in Tennessee -- Amid heightened public concerns of bioterrorism and fears about anthrax, Gov. Don Sundquist today reassured Tennesseans that the state has taken numerous steps to strengthen its capacity to respond rapidly to biological or chemical attacks. We are working diligently to ensure that we are prepared to deal with a bioterrorist event should one occur," Sundquist said.
