Securing Transportation Systems and Securing Water and Wastewater Systems Interested authors are welcome to submit an abstract for a chapter in these forthcoming books. Workshop on Radio-Frequency ID Security (June 7-9; Istanbul, Turkey) The workshop focuses on approaches to solve security and data-protection issues in advanced contactless technologies such as radio-frequency identification. Advanced Video and Signal Based Surveillance (August 29–September 1) This conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society welcomes contributions on sensors and data fusion; processing, detection, and recognition; analytics, behavior, and biometrics; interaction and description; applications; and systems, performances, and ethical issues. European Radar Conference (September 30–October 1, 2010; Paris) In addition to scientific papers, typically from academia and research institutes, contributions are encouraged on industrial developments, covering various applicative fields including homeland security. Applied Imagery Pattern Recognition (October 13-15, 2010; Washington, DC) This year’s theme is “From Sensors to Sense.” The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Computer Society is accepting abstracts of papers on homeland security applications of imagery pattern recognition, among many other topics. IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (October 30–November 6, 2010; Knoxville, TN) The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Nuclear Science Symposium welcomes papers on “Instrumentation for Homeland and National Security,” among many other topics. Advances in Databases and Information Systems (September 20-24; Novi Sad, Serbia) One track of the conference concerns “Personal Identifiable Information: Privacy, Ethics, and Security.” The conference is soliciting presentations on research accomplishments, experience reports, and project overviews. IEEE Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security (November 8-10, 2010; Waltham, MA) This Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers conference will focus on innovative technologies for deterring and preventing attacks, protecting critical infrastructure and individuals, and mitigating damage and expediting recovery. Submissions are desired in the broad areas of critical infrastructure and key resources protection, border protection and monitoring, and disaster recovery and response, that will have an application within about five years. Liberty and Security in the Age of Terrorism (November 22-24; Lexington, KY) The conference of the Commonwealth Security Studies Laboratory in the College of Business and Public Affairs at Morehead State University will examine the appropriateness of measures designed to defeat enemies abroad and ensure domestic tranquility in light of constitutional liberties and will compare the cost of incremental security improvements in terms of resources expended, privacy surrendered, rights infringed upon, and principles betrayed. Uncertainty in Fire Standards and What to Do About It (June 16, 2011; Anaheim, CA) The symposium will cover how testing laboratories, enforcement authorities, manufacturers, and practicing engineers incorporate uncertainty into their use of results from fire safety tests and calculations, along with the legal, technical, and ethical implications for these different approaches, and provide overviews of some of the latest technical guidance.
